Before he became a politician, Don Young worked as a teacher in Alaska. He taught high school social studies for eight years before running for office. Young was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1973 and has served continuously ever since. He is the longest-serving member of the House and the longest-serving Republican in the House.
