Hofstadter's 1979 book, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, also analyzes the work of M.C. Escher, the Dutch artist whose works are characterized by optical illusions, impossible objects, and other mind-bending imagery. Escher was particularly interested in the relationship between art and mathematics, and many of his works explore the idea of infinity.
