Hunter S. Thompson was a United States Marine, before he became a journalist and author. He served in the Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957, and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Thompson attended the University of Kansas, where he studied journalism. He began his career as a journalist in 1959, working for the Kansas City Star.
