Edward Albee was born on March 12, 1928 in Washington, D.C. He was an American playwright, screenwriter, and librettist. His work was often dark and satirical, and dealt with themes of alienation, loneliness, and despair. Albee is considered one of the most important American playwrights of the 20th century. He won three Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1986.
