Cowpox virus, a mild disease in cows, was used by Edward Jenner to create the smallpox vaccine. Jenner observed that milkmaids who had been exposed to cowpox were immune to smallpox, a deadly disease at the time. He hypothesized that cowpox exposure protected against smallpox and tested this by deliberately infecting a boy with cowpox and then exposing him to smallpox.
