Edward the Elder died at Farndon, a village in the English county of Nottinghamshire, on 17 July 924. He was the son of King Alfred the Great and his wife, Ealhswith, and succeeded his father to the throne in 899. Edward was a successful military leader who fought against the Vikings and expanded the Anglo-Saxon kingdom. He also encouraged the development of learning and culture in England.
