Æthelred married Alfred the Great's daughter Æthelflæd. He was the son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and his second wife, Osburh. Æthelred was the brother of King Edward the Elder, who succeeded Alfred the Great to the throne of Wessex. Æthelred and Æthelflæd were married in 899, and they had two sons, Æthelweard and Æthelstan. Æthelred was a successful military leader, and he helped to defend Wessex from the Vikings.
