Eileen Collins was born on November 19, 1956. She is a retired NASA astronaut and the first woman to command a space shuttle mission. Collins was born in Elmira, New York, and graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1978. She was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1990 and became an astronaut in 1992.
