Severus Alexander took over the principate after Elagabalus. He was a young man of 14 when he was adopted by Elagabalus, and he succeeded him as emperor in 222. Alexander was a capable and popular ruler, but he was also a victim of political intrigue. He was assassinated in 235 by members of his own army.
