Elijah Muhammad, born Elijah Robert Poole in Georgia, was the leader of the Nation of Islam from 1934 to 1975. He is considered to be one of the most influential African-American religious leaders of the 20th century. Muhammad's teachings focused on black nationalism, self-reliance, and racial separation. He preached that whites were devils and that black people would eventually overcome white oppression and establish a separate nation.
