Engel was first elected to Congress at the age of 42. He won a special election in 1978 to succeed Lester Wolff, who had resigned to become mayor of Yonkers. Engel has been reelected to Congress 16 times, most recently in 2020. He is the longest-serving member of Congress from New York State.
