Emilia Plater was born in 1806 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. She was a noblewoman who became a national heroine of Poland and Lithuania for her role in the November Uprising of 1830-1831. Plater was killed in battle in 1831 at the age of 25.
