A train near Fort Victoria was bombed in 1965. This was the first time that an act of terrorism had been committed against a train in South Africa. The attack was carried out by the African National Congress (ANC), and it was intended to draw attention to the plight of black South Africans under apartheid. The bombing resulted in the deaths of 17 people and the injuries of many more.
