Between 1980 and 1988, Erich Mielke served as the Minister of State Security. In this role, he oversaw the East German secret police, the Stasi. Mielke was a close ally of East German leader Erich Honecker and was responsible for suppressing dissent and opposition to the regime. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Mielke was arrested and charged with crimes against humanity.
