Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty claimed the throne by declaration following a rebellion against the Sui Dynasty. He had previously been a general under Sui Emperor Yangdi, but he turned against him after Yangdi ordered the execution of many of his generals. Gaozu led a successful rebellion against Yangdi and declared himself emperor of the Tang Dynasty in 618.
