Emperor Gaozu, also known as Liu Bang, was the founder and first emperor of the Han dynasty of China. He was born in 256 BC in Taiyuan, which is now the capital of Shanxi province. Gaozu was a peasant who rose through the ranks of the military to become a general under the Qin dynasty.
