Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) was an English civil engineer and designer of locomotives. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of the railway industry. His most famous work was the Rocket, which was the first steam locomotive to win the Rainhill Trials in 1829. The Rocket was later used to haul the first passenger train on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830.
