Eugene Merle Shoemaker was an American geologist and planetary scientist best known for co-discovering Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9, which impacted Jupiter in 1994. He also made significant contributions to the study of asteroids and comets, and was a co-founder of the Planetary Society.
