Lech Wałęsa, the leader of the Solidarity movement, was the first democratically elected president of Poland after the fall of communism. He served from 1990 to 1995, when he was succeeded by Aleksander Kwaśniewski. Kwaśniewski, a former communist minister, was elected as the candidate of the Democratic Left Alliance. He served two terms, from 1995 to 2005.
