Yes, at least twice. In 1836, he took a large dose of laudanum, but survived and awoke the next day. In 1841, he was arrested and imprisoned in a debtors' prison in Marshalsea, and was distraught by his financial situation. He attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a razor, but was unsuccessful.
