Prešeren's life was a struggle with rejections and losses of close friends. As a young man, he was rejected by the woman he loved, Julija Primic. He was also rejected by his father, who disapproved of his poetry and his romantic relationships. Prešeren's friend, the poet Matija Čop, was killed in a duel in 1835. Prešeren was devastated by Čop's death and wrote a series of poems mourning his friend.
