On 28 September 2023, Amin Maalouf was elected Perpetual Secretary of the Académie française, succeeding Hélène Carrère d'Encausse. He is the first Lebanese writer to be elected to this prestigious position, and only the second non-French person to hold the post. Maalouf is a renowned novelist and essayist whose works have been translated into more than 40 languages.
