Gary Snyder is an American poet, essayist, and environmental activist. He was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1930. Snyder studied literature at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and later earned a doctorate in literature from the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at several universities, including the University of California, Davis, where he was based for much of his academic career.
