The Continent of Antarctica was discovered by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev in 1820. Bellingshausen and Lazarev were Russian naval officers who led an expedition to the Southern Ocean. They were the first Europeans to sight Antarctica, and they also made the first recorded landing on the continent.
