Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was born on November 12, 1778, in Saaremaa, Estonia. He was a Russian navigator and explorer who is best known for leading two expeditions to the Antarctic in 1819-1821 and 1821-1823, respectively. During these expeditions, he became the first European to see the continent of Antarctica and to circumnavigate it.
