James Cook was a British explorer who is credited with the discovery of Antarctica. He made three voyages to the South Pacific, and on his third voyage, he reached the Antarctic Circle on January 17, 1773. Cook was unable to find a passage through the ice to the South Pole, but he did disprove Theory that Antarctica was a continent.
