Mikhail Lazarev was second-in-command of the Russian expedition to the Antarctic in 1819-1821. He was also the captain of the sloop Mirny, one of two ships that set out from Kronstadt on 28 July 1819. The expedition was led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who was the first European to sight Antarctica.
