The 1819–1821 expedition of Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was the first expedition to circumnavigate Antarctica. Bellingshausen and his crew sailed in two ships, the Vostok and the Mirny, and were the first to sight Antarctica's coastline, on January 28, 1820. They also discovered the Peter I Island and the Alexander I Land.
