Fuad I was the seventh son of Ismail the Magnificent, the founder of the modern Egyptian state. Fuad ascended to the throne in 1917 after the death of his elder brother, Abbas II. During his reign, Egypt experienced a period of political instability and economic hardship. Fuad died in 1936 and was succeeded by his son, Farouk I.
