Felipe González became a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1964, while studying at the University of Seville. He joined the party's youth wing, the Socialist Youth of Spain (Juventudes Socialistas de España), and quickly became involved in student politics. In 1967, he was elected to the party's national committee.
