Pope Formosus was a bishop of Rome before he was elected pope in 891. He is best known for his posthumous trial and deposition in 897. The trial was presided over by Pope Stephen VI, who had Formosus' body exhumed and tried for perjury and other crimes. Formosus was found guilty and his body was mutilated and thrown into the Tiber River.
