Interventions in power struggles marked the rule of Pope Formosus in the Papal States. After being elected pope in 891, Formosus was expelled from Rome in 896 by his rival Theodore II. He later returned and had Theodore II deposed. In 897, Formosus was deposed by a synod of bishops and excommunicated. However, he was reinstated as pope by a rival synod in 898.
