Pope Formosus was a 9th-century pope who lived from 816 to 896 AD. He was born in Gaeta, Italy, and was a member of the powerful Spoleto family. He was elected pope in 891, and his reign was marked by conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor, Otto I. Formosus was eventually deposed and mutilated by Otto, and he died in exile in 896.
