Answer
In 1668, Francesco Redi published his famous work, "Experiments on the Generation of Insects", in which he presented the results of a series of experiments designed to test the prevailing belief that maggots spontaneously generated from rotting meat. Redi's experiments showed that maggots were actually the larvae of flies that had laid eggs on the meat, and that if the meat was protected from flies, no maggots would appear.
