Redi is credited with being the father of modern parasitology because he conducted the first scientific experiment that disproved the idea of spontaneous generation. In his 1668 experiment, Redi placed a piece of meat in two jars, one covered with a cloth and the other left uncovered. After a few days, the meat in the uncovered jar was swarming with maggots, while the meat in the covered jar remained untouched.
