François Duvalier was a Haitian politician and dictator who was President of Haiti from 1957 to 1971. Duvalier was a doctor by profession and his greatest achievement was in the field of public health. He launched a campaign to eradicate malaria, which had been a major problem in Haiti. Duvalier also established a number of hospitals and clinics, and improved the country's sanitation system.
