The Battle of Stalingrad began on 23 August 1942, when the German Sixth Army and Fourth Panzer Army invaded the city from the west and south. After a month of heavy fighting, the Germans captured the city centre on 23 November. However, the Soviets had surrounded the Germans within the city, and the Sixth Army was cut off from supplies.
