Thomas Yayi Boni, the successor of Mathieu Kérékou who served as President of Benin from 1996 to 2006, won the 2006 presidential election in Benin, taking office on April 6, 2006. Yayi Boni was then re-elected in 2011, completing his second and final term in 2016.
