Ernie Pyle was born on August 3, 1900. He was an American journalist and war correspondent who covered World War II for the Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance. Pyle's columns were widely read and helped to humanize the war for readers back home. He was killed by enemy fire on the Pacific island of Ie Shima on April 18, 1945.
