Fulbert Youlou was a Roman Catholic priest who later became the first President of the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville). He was born in a small village in the French Congo in 1917 and was ordained a priest in 1946. He became involved in politics in the early 1950s and was elected to the French National Assembly in 1958.
