Fourteen months was the duration of Slack's service in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. He left West Point before graduating in 1842, to begin his military career as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 3rd U.S. Infantry. Following the war, he remained in the army, where he distinguished himself in various conflicts, including the Seminole Wars, and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a major general.
