Genrikh Yagoda was born on 7 November 1891. He was a Soviet revolutionary and politician who served as the first head of the Soviet secret police, the NKVD, from 1934 to 1936. He was a close associate of Joseph Stalin and was instrumental in the purges of the 1930s. He was eventually executed in 1938 after being accused of treason.
