Georg von Hertling died on 4 January 1919. He was a German politician who served as Chancellor of Germany from 1917 to 1918. He was a member of the Catholic Centre Party and was appointed chancellor by Kaiser Wilhelm II in an attempt to end World War I. Hertling's government was unable to negotiate a peace settlement and was replaced by the government of Philipp Scheidemann in November 1918.
