George Monck began his military career in 1625, as a young officer of the English army. He fought in the Thirty Years' War, and in the 1640s he fought for the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. After the defeat of the Royalists, he went into exile in France. He returned to England in 1660, and played a leading role in the Restoration of the monarchy.
