The Australian Labor Party was in power before George Reid became Prime Minister in 1904. The ALP was founded in 1891 and was the first political party in Australia to be based on the principles of social democracy. The ALP won the 1903 federal election and Andrew Fisher became Prime Minister. However, Fisher's government was defeated in the 1904 election and Reid became Prime Minister.
