Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, the first leader of the People's Republic of Romania, died on 28 March 1965, aged 66, of lung cancer. He had been diagnosed with the disease in 1963 and had undergone surgery to remove a lung. However, the cancer returned and he died in a Bucharest hospital. His successor, Nicolae Ceaușescu, ruled Romania until 1989.
