Answer
Nicolae Ceaușescu succeeded Gheorghiu-Dej as General Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party in 1965. Under Ceaușescu, Romania became increasingly isolated from the Soviet Union and its allies, and adopted a more independent foreign policy. Ceaușescu also oversaw a period of rapid economic growth in Romania, but this growth was accompanied by widespread human rights abuses and political repression. In 1989, Ceaușescu was overthrown and executed by a popular uprising.
