Gheorghiu-Dej led the Romanian Communist Party from 1947 until his death in 1965. He was a close ally of Joseph Stalin and helped to establish a Stalinist regime in Romania. He also oversaw the collectivization of agriculture and the nationalization of industry. After Stalin's death, Gheorghiu-Dej pursued a more independent foreign policy and sought to improve relations with the West.
