Gordian II was the maternal uncle of Gordian III. Gordian II was proclaimed emperor in 238 CE, after the death of his nephew, Alexander Severus. However, Gordian II's reign was short-lived, as he was defeated and killed by the forces of Maximinus Thrax just a few months later. Gordian III was then proclaimed emperor by the Senate, with his father, Gordian I, as co-emperor.
