Gotse Delchev, a prominent leader of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO), met his end during a skirmish with Ottoman forces on May 4, 1903. The encounter took place near the village of Banitsa, in the Serres region of present-day Greece. Delchev, along with a small group of IMRO fighters, was ambushed by a larger Ottoman detachment while attempting to cross the Mesta River.
